Thomas Dublin and Kathryn Kish Sklar have now posted five installments of the Online Biographical Dictionary of the Woman Suffrage Movement in the United States containing almost 3,000 biographical Rose Suffrage Paradesketches of grassroots women suffragists. They will be adding to the database regularly over the next year and when complete it will include crowdsourced biographical sketches of more than 3,600 women suffrage activists, primarily concentrated in the period 1890-1920. The sketches will place women’s suffrage activism within the frame of women’s broader social agenda, before and after the passage of the 19th Amendment in August 1920. The Ohio State University library’s Billy Ireland Cartoon Library and Museum in Columbus, Ohio, exhibit including Rose O’Neill. “LADIES FIRST: A Century of Women’s Innovations in Comics and Cartoon Art” re-opened on Sept. 3 2020 and runs through Nov. 29, 2020. “[W]omen have always pushed cartoon art forward. A century ago, suffragettes transformed cartooning to champion their cause. In the booming newspaper comic strip era, artists like Jackie Ormes, Nell Brinkley, and Rose O’Neil found enormous success marketing and licensing their characters into products that would influence young people for decades. Contemporary artists carve out a place between fact and fiction to share deeply personal stories in underground comix, graphic novels and anthologies.”
